For most of us in the UK the Asian Tsunami is a distant if sad memory. Much has happened in the world since that dreadful occurrence. However, for one small company in the North West of England that fateful Boxing Day in 2004 was just the start of a long journey that hopefully will turn a small part of this awful tragedy in to some kind of small triumph.
In Dundee, Scotland for Christmas Garry Stiven, founder of the Coconoil brand watched TV with horror as the chilling events in surrounding the Tsunami in Asia were flashed across the world. No stranger to natural disaster this ex Save The Children Fund Field Director was horrified and saddened like all of us by the sheer enormity of the tragedy. Garry resolved there and then to use his past experience of such disasters as Hurricane Fifi in Honduras and the Guatemalan to help in any way he could. Within days Garry had arrived in Sri Lanka, one of the worst effected countries and along with some Sri Lankan and expat friends set about converting a newly constructed college in the Western Region in to an orphanage.
It was whilst taking a break in a friend’s apartment in Colombo that Garry read in an American lifestyle magazine how Virgin Coconut Oil from the Yucatan in Mexico was fast becoming one of the favourite “superfoods” on America’s West Coast. This rang bells with Garry and the very first seeds of the UK’s most popular brands Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil were planted.
After researching all the benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil and speaking to local coconut farmers and processors in Sri Lanka Garry was convinced that by producing and exporting Virgin Coconut Oil in Sri Lanka to the UK and EU a win – win situation could be created. By adding value to the already available coconut crop in Sri Lanka employment could be created for local farmers and their communities and much- needed foreign exchange could be earned. On the other side of the world the Sri Lanka Virgin Coconut Oil could start the long battle to bring better health to millions in the West who were suffering from lifestyle ailments caused by a very poor choice of diet accompanied by a lack of nutritional knowledge and lots of misinformation.
After spending a short period of successful market research in the UK Garry returned to Sri Lanka to find a suitable business partner and to organise production of the first batch of Coconoil. This all took a few months but finally on 28th August 2005 the very first tub of Coconoil Original Virgin Coconut Oil was sold at the Poynton Show in Cheshire. This was the start of a very exciting journey for all concerned.
However, as Virgin Coconut Oil is in actual fact made up of more than 90% saturated fat it was initially met with much scepticism because of the establishment’s misguided and uninformed views linking all saturated fats under one banner. Modern research has shown this to be wrong and that men need to consume at least 30gms of saturated fats per day and women at least 20gms of saturated fat per day. Like so many things in life saturated fats come in good and bad forms. Virgin Coconut Oil is a Medium Chain Fatty Acid and therefore falls in to the category of a “good saturated fat” which it certainly is!
Medium Chain Fatty Acids and in particular Virgin Coconut Oil have a great number of benefits when used as a cooking oil or nutritional supplement. When ingested in whatever way Virgin Coconut Oil goes straight to the liver to be converted in to energy. Virgin Coconut Oil is very easily digested leaving no adipose fats to be stored in the body and is cholesterol free. This combination of benefits means that Virgin Coconut Oil is beneficial to the cardio vascular system unlike less healthy oils that leave fat and cholesterol in the body when ingested.
Nearly 50% of Virgin Coconut Oil is made up of the very beneficial fatty acid known as Lauric Acid. Lauric Acid is also found in human breast milk and is responsible for helping to build the baby’s immune system to be resistant to viruses, bacteria and fungal infections. The large amounts of Lauric Acid in Virgin Coconut Oil can help children and adults improve, repair and maintain their immune systems in exactly the same way.
Since the first small pallet of Coconoil Original Virgin Coconut Oil arrived in the UK in August 2005 the company has seen an amazing change in the public’s attitude to Virgin Coconut Oil. The initial battle was to convince them that not all saturated fats were the same and that good saturated fats are absolutely essential to healthy living. The “education” process was and still is a hard battle but a major breakthrough came when one of the countries most respected elite sports nutritionists, Matt Lovell, started using Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oils as the only cooking oil at the England International Rugby teams training camps. Most elite sports nutritionists now recommend that their clients use Virgin Coconut Oil instead of any other oils for cooking. Virgin Coconut Oil helps build lean muscle and stamina as well as keeping the athletes free from illnesses that might interfere with their performances. As well as Winter Olympic Gold Medallist Amy Williams Coconoil supply to the England International Rugby Union team, Sale Sharks, Super League’s Wigan Warriors and a host of other elite athletes and thousands of regular keep fit enthusiasts.
At around the same time Dr. Sarah Myhill MB BS a highly respected GP who has her own clinic specialising in the treatment of ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other conditions arising from poor nutrition also began to recommend Virgin Coconut Oil as the best oil to cook with. Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil is now sold to people suffering from a wide variety of conditions including hypothyroidism, obesity, ME, diabetes, cardio vascular problems and skin complaints such as excema and psoriasis.
However, by far and away most people that are now changing to this wonderful oil are doing so just because Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil is a wonderful culinary oil that enhances the flavour and texture of the food you eat. Virgin Coconut Oil is probably the healthiest all round, easy to use cooking oil available today. In the words of elite sports nutritionist Matt Lovell “everybody who cares about their health and fitness should include Virgin Coconut Oil in to their daily diet”.
Coconoil are pleased to say because of the increased sales of Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oils in the UK and Europe our coconut farmers are enjoying an added value to their most important cash crop. The company that extracts the Virgin Coconut Oil is also expanding and employing more people and in the last month have started a complete new shift to keep up with our demand. The growth in popularity of Virgin Coconut Oil has also led to other companies doing the same as Coconoil (but not as well) and this too is helping the economy of Sri Lanka recover slowly but surely from the dreadful long term effects of The Asian Tsunami.
