Reading a lifestyle magazine one evening Garry chanced upon an article about the health benefits of coconut oil and its increasing popularity in California and an idea was born.
Garry researched coconut oil production in Sri Lanka, discovering that most of the country’s exported oil was processed and sold to major food manufacturers. The virgin coconut oil had a limited market for cosmetic production in Italy and was not available in the UK.
Garry found a supplier, returned to the UK and, together with a colleague , has become the only importer to the UK of Sri Lanka virgin coconut oil, under the brand name Coconoil.
Garry Stiven continues to fundraise for Sri Lanka on a personal basis, raising money to help replace the school for the villages of Mawella and Hanwella, both of which were destroyed by the tsunami. Children from the villages lost their families and their homes and the creation of a new school will go some way to helping them to rebuild their lives.
There are 3 main categories of Coconut Oil.
Crude Coconut Oil: This is the oil that is extracted from copra which is the dried meat of the coconut. Crude Coconut Oil is unfit for human consumption as during the drying process the meat becomes dirty and contaminated. Crude coconut oil can be used for some industrial processes such as soap and candle making. It can also be processed in different ways for different end uses. As the name suggests this is the most basic of the oils extracted from coconuts.
RBD Coconut Oil: This stands for Refined, Bleached and Deodorised. This is the process by which the Crude Coconut Oil is converted in to a product suitable for human consumption. This is the most common grade of coconut oil currently used in cooking and food production. However, as chemicals and high heats are used in the production of RDB Coconut Oil the nutritional value of the coconut oil is severely compromised. If not properly processed there is a danger that some of the chemicals may also be left in and could be harmful if consumed. There have also been several instances of RBD Coconut Oil being mixed with other cheaper oils to increase the yield and therefore make increased profits. As RBD has no smell or taste it is very difficult to detect the presence of these other oils. The reason for processing the oil in this way is that it can be mass produced and therefore cheap. Unfortunately whilst still being a relatively safe cooking medium it has lost much of its nutritional goodness and when hydrogenated, as RBD often is, it becomes positively dangerous.
Virgin Coconut Oil: This is the oil that is extracted from the fresh meat of the coconut. Virgin Coconut Oil is by far the most nutritious, beneficial and safest of the coconut oils and is probably the healthiest of all the cooking oils available today. To be graded as a Virgin Coconut Oil the extraction methods must not use any high heats or chemicals and nothing at all must be added in the processing. The moisture content must be less than 0.2%. It is owing to the fact that the moisture and free fatty acid contents are so low in Virgin Coconut Oil that it has a very long shelf life of at least 2 years. The end result is a completely natural, pure oil which retains the highest possible amounts of all the beneficial nutrients of the fresh coconut. Virgin Coconut Oil is a liquid in the heat but as it cools below 24C it becomes a solid and in temperate climates it is usually solid for most of the year. Virgin Coconut Oil also retains the wonderful aroma and delicate flavour of the coconut. Any coconut oil which does not retain this aroma and taste has been processed in some form or another and is not a Virgin Coconut Oil. To be sure that you are buying a Virgin Coconut Oil that is certified always buy Coconoil Certified Virgin Coconut Oil.

Coconut oil is commonly found nowadays in supermarkets around the globe and has become a popular choice due to its many nutritional benefits. In order to get the best out of your daily dose of coconut oil, here are a couple of pointers to help you understand the unique differences between coconut oil and virgin coconut oil.
All forms of coconut oil are derived from the copra, which is the flesh or meat part of the coconut. One of the main differences between the two coconut oils is the kinds of processing that they undergo.
RBD coconut oil is one of the most common forms of the oil, with its name defined as; refined, bleached and deodorized. Although RBD coconut oil is mostly used for cooking and mass food production, if it is not properly processed or has been hydrogenated, it can be dangerous to consume.
To ensure it is safe, the copra needs to be refined by using solvent chemicals and then bleached and deodorised, to eliminate any bad tastes and smells. This process also changes the colour of the oil from dark brown to white. As a further result of the refining process, copra-based RBD coconut oil is less nutritional than virgin coconut oil.
Crude oil on the other hand, although also extracted from the copra, is unfit for human consumption. During the drying process this most basic form of pure coconut oil becomes contaminated and therefore is only used for things like soap and candle making.
Virgin coconut oil remains the healthiest form of coconut oil and offers many benefits to those who incorporate it into their diets. It can only be produced with fresh coconut meat and must not come into any contact with chemicals or heat. This allows the virgin coconut oil to retain its fresh scent and flavour. With a long shelf life and large amounts of nutrients, it is certainly the tastiest and healthiest choice for all.
